Bill Maher says Louis CK should be allowed back into the mainstream after #MeToo scandal

Bill Maher has called for comedian Louis CK to be allowed to return to mainstream entertainment following his sexual misconduct scandal at the height of the #MeToo movement.

“Isn’t it time everyone said, ‘OK, that wasn’t a cool thing to do, but it’s been long enough and welcome back.’ Enough!” Maher said in a new episode of his podcast, “Club Random.”

“I mean, for God’s sake, it’s not the end of the world,” Maher told comedian Bill Burr during a conversation about cancel culture.

“People have done much worse things and gotten less,” Maher told Burr. “There is no rhyme or reason to #MeToo-style punishments.”

Louis CK admitted to allegations of sexual misconduct in 2017 after five women claimed he masturbated in front of them without their consent.

Despite his fall from grace at the time and complaints from Maher, CK returned to the spotlight to win a Grammy Award in 2022 for his album “Sincerely Louis CK,” and has since returned to the stand-up circuit.

“They took $50 million, I think they punished him,” Burr said of CK.

Burr also argued that cancel culture was no longer a relevant cultural force.

“It started out as something that everyone could agree on, and then quickly it got out of hand,” Burr said of the beginnings of cancel culture.

“I remember every time cancel culture got to the point where it was like, ‘I don’t like some of the topics in your stand-up act,’ right? That’s when it got weird,” he said.

But Burr said cancel culture is “over” and “nobody cares about it anymore.”

“That’s absolutely not true,” Maher said. “Either of us could be canceled in the next two minutes.”

Maher has repeatedly spoken out against cancel culture during his career.

In 2023, Maher said he lost many “super woke” fans who disagreed with his political views. Although he is progressive, Maher often mocks what he sees as the excesses of the left.

“Don’t let the door hit you in the a-,” the comedian said. “At first you weren’t fun. You have a terrible sense of humor.
