As Bihar gears up for the upcoming parliamentary elections, the voices on the ground in Ujiarpur constituency reflect a clear shift in women’s voting sentiment, a shift driven less by local leaders than by welfare benefits reaching households directly.

Villagers expressed frustration over the lack of visible developments and the growing gap between elected representatives and the public, according to a report by News18 Hindi.

Residents like Bahadur Das said their MP “won” the elections and “never came back”, adding that development will only happen when leaders are visible.

Others, like Ashok Das, pointed out that the local MP only appears during election times, highlighting a lack of engagement that has left many disillusioned.

However, in the face of this discontent, female voters have emerged as a decisive factor, drawing their loyalty from social schemes that directly benefit them.

“I will vote for those who helped us”

Devti Devi, a resident, told News18 Hindi that her support lay firmly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

“The CM and the Prime Minister supported us. My old age pension increased from ₹400 to ₹1,100 and I get 5 kg ration every month. What more do I need?” she said.

“Mai jiska khaungi, usi ka gaungi (I will speak for those who help me eat)“, she added.

His statement would reflect a broader trend in rural Bihar, where welfare is reshaping voter alignment, particularly among women beneficiaries.

Recent programs focused on women

This sentiment grew stronger after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana on September 26.

The initiative saw ₹10,000 each transferred to the bank accounts of 75 lakh women across Bihar, a total disbursement of ₹7,500 crore.

Designed to promote women’s empowerment and self-reliance, the program provides one woman from each family with funds to begin or expand income-generating work.

Officials said participants could later access up to ₹2 lakh in additional assistance. Training and support will be offered through self-help groups, while gramin haats (rural markets) will be strengthened to help women sell goods and services.

Past election results
