The Indian National Congress (INC) on Thursday (October 16) released its first list of 48 candidates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, even as seat-sharing talks with its Mahagathbandhan allies remain unresolved.

The party has fielded state unit chief Rajesh Ram from Kutumba and CLP chief Shakeel Ahmad Khan from Kadwa.

Bihar Youth Congress president Prakash Garib Das will contest from Bachhwada, while Jayesh Mangal Singh, Amit Giri and Abhishek Ranjan have been nominated from Bagaha, Nautan and Chanpatia respectively.

Wasi Ahmed will fight from Bettiah, Shyam Bihari Prasad from Raxaul and Shashi Bhushan Rai alias Gappu Rai from Govindgan.

The Congress’s announcement comes before the deadline of October 17 for the submission of candidatures for the first phase of the vote and October 20 for the second phase.

The move underlines a growing unease within the Mahagathbandhan as the alliance – comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and Left parties – struggles to finalize its seat matrix.

A News18 report said that the RJD, which won 75 seats in the 2020 assembly elections, is offering the Congress around 55-58 seats, while the latter is pushing for at least 61-65, closer to the 70 it contested last time.

The Congress’s insistence comes despite its low strike rate in 2020, when it won only 19 of 70 seats, the report added.

The RJD, which projects Tejashwi Yadav as the main ministerial face, would not be willing to reduce its own share below 130 seats, citing its stronger popular presence.

As nomination deadlines approach, the Grand Alliance faces increasing pressure to project unity.

The ruling NDA, led by the JD(U) and the BJP, has already finalized its seat-sharing deal, with the two major constituents fighting for an equal number of seats.

Elections to the 243-seat Bihar Assembly will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with counting scheduled for November 14.
