Bihar Elections 2025: CM Nitish Kumar inaugurates first phase of Patna Metro; check route, stations, fare

Weeks before the upcoming state assembly elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the first phase of the Patna Metro Rail project on Monday (October 6). This first phase of the 3.6 km elevated section of the Blue Line will be open to the public on October 7, 2025.

In a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the city, the inaugural stretch of the priority corridor will extend from the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) to Bhoothnath railway station. It will cover three key stations: Patliputra ISBT, Zero Mile and Bhoothnath.

The inaugural journey of the metro took place from Patliputra bus depot. Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha were also present at the function. In February 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the metro project, estimated to cost ₹13,365 crore.

Welcoming the project earlier in the day, Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal said people would get relief from traffic jams. In a conversation with ANI, he said, “Today will be written in golden letters in the history of Patna that the people of Patna, the people of Bihar, are benefiting from the facilities of the Metro Rail. Till now, we were going to Kolkata and Delhi to see the Metro Rail. People will be relieved from the problem of traffic jam.”

JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan Prasad also welcomed the project, saying CM Nitish Kumar had taken “big decisions” for the state. “The long wait of the people of Patna is about to end. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, big decisions have undoubtedly been taken for the state,” Prasad added.

Route and stations

The first operational route covers a section of approximately 4.3 km. The route starts from the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Bhoothnath. The three main stations in this stretch are: Patliputra ISBT, Zero Mile and Bhoothnath.

Schedules

Metro service runs daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with 40 to 42 scheduled trips along the corridor. In the initial phase, trains are expected to run every 20 minutes.

Price

The fare structure is based on the number of stations traveled. The minimum fare is ₹15 for a single station journey, while the maximum fare is ₹30 for the entire route between ISBT and Bhoothnath.

Facilities

The coaches are designed with motifs inspired by the famous Madhubani art of Bihar, featuring traditional motifs. Each train has a capacity of 158 passengers, including 12 seats reserved for women and people with disabilities.

Additionally, each train can accommodate up to 940 people standing.

The coaches feature modern amenities such as mobile phone and laptop charging points, front emergency doors and double sliding doors for enhanced safety and passenger experience.
