Mary Peltola is a Democrat who as a child campaigned with her father and his friend, a longtime Republican state congressman. Later, she helped re-elect a Republican senator. And she’s friends with Sarah Palin, the former governor of the state who popularized the kind of combative, anti-establishment politics that propelled Donald Trump to the White House.

“She’s progressive, especially socially,” Lindsay Kavanaugh, executive director of the Alaska Democratic Party, said of Peltola. “She’s a Democrat from Alaska” and “probably, compared to a Democrat from the Lower 48, she’s a bit more moderate.”
