Biden threatens China for attacks on Philippine ships – mutual defense treaty

US President Biden said any attack on Philippine ships in the South China Sea would invoke their mutual defense treaty.

The context is China’s claim to large swathes of the South China Sea, a claim deemed baseless under international law by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2016. China thus attacked Philippine vessels sailing according to international agreements.

The Philippines and the United States have had a mutual defense treaty since 195. In a nutshell, it obliges the two countries to support each other if another party attacks the Philippines or the United States.

The Chinese attacks have added another geopolitical flashpoint.

The main actors of the axis Russia, China, Iran, North Korea.
