Biden is doing well, but we have been ‘polarized and traumatized’ over the past five or six years
During an interview with CNN that aired Monday on “CNN Primetime,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said President Joe Biden is doing well and people have a negative view of the economy because “we have been polarized and traumatized over the past few years. five or six years” and we haven’t had “time to take a deep breath and think about it. What we are experiencing is not unique to the United States at all, it is a global phenomenon.”
While discussing the economy, CNN Chief Political Correspondent Dana Bash asked, “I want to talk about this as it relates to the headwinds that President Biden is facing as it relates to perception, gap as you call it, between the way people think about economics. the economy is doing and how people think it is doing. It is true that unemployment is close to its historic low and that inflation has fallen below 4%. Interest rates are high, gas prices are rising again, and ultimately the majority of Americans simply don’t feel happy with the current situation. Is it just a messaging problem or [are] are there more fundamental problems than this?
Newsom responded: “Look, we’ve been coping, we’ve been polarized and traumatized over the last five or six years. I don’t think any of us have given ourselves time to take a deep breath and think about it. What we are experiencing is not unique to the United States at all, it is a global phenomenon. The COVID issues and the stress it has created, the supply chain impacts, what happened with the Ukraine invasion, the impacts with OPEC Plus in particular — another reason why we must get out of dependence. [on] fossil fuels – all these things are piling up right now. But, on a directional level, this president is efficient. We’re seeing inflation fall by about two-thirds, or just under two-thirds since its peak. This is a very positive directional sign. The lowest unemployment rate for blacks, Hispanics and the disabled, the lowest level in 70 years for women in this country. With all due respect to the Republican Party, they can point fingers and say it could have been better, it could have been better, but they are not offering any alternative strategies to get there.”
Bash then asked: “But Joe Biden is the president and therefore the expectation and type of referendum rests on the outgoing president. Is there a danger in telling people what the statistics are and making them feel like they shouldn’t feel as bad as they do? »
Newsom responded: “No, I think you have to – you have to feel people’s pain, you have to recognize that. That’s why I started talking about our trauma and our polarization, this accumulation of stress and the distress that people feel and this feeling of dislocation, of imbalance, this notion that we are more disconnected of our policy. You see it on the evening news, this stress and this frustration that we have not yet mastered. This is all real and I think it makes things more difficult.
Later, Newsom said Biden had a strong record, but not all of the world’s problems had been solved and people were still worried and worried about the world they lived in.
