Former American president Joe Biden and former vice-president Kamala Harris were among more than 1,000 people in mourning who attended the funeral of the former Democratic president of the Minnesota Chamber, Melissa Hortman on Saturday.
She had been death Two weeks earlier by a man pretending to be a police officer in an attack that the main federal prosecutor of Minnesota called an assassination.
Her husband Mark was also killed in the attack, with a state senator and his wife also injured.
“Melissa Hortman will be remembered as the most consecutive speaker in the history of Minnesota. I remember her as a close friend, a mentor and the most talented legislator I have ever known,” said Governor Tim Walz in his praise.
“For seven years, I have the privilege of signing its program. I know that millions of minnesotans live better because she and Mark have chosen the public service and politics. ”
Hortman has helped adopt a large program of liberal initiatives, including free lunches for students from public schools as well as extended protections for abortion and trans rights.
Dozens of current and former state legislators of the two parties and other elected officials who worked with Hortman also attended the funeral.
The man accused of having killed the Hortmans at their home in the suburbs of Minneapolis in Brooklyn Park on June 14, and injured the Senator of the Democratic State John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, at their home in Champlin nearby, made a brief appearance in court on Friday. He is back in court Thursday.
