President Biden marked his 81st birthday with a tongue-in-cheek reference to his age in a fiery Instagram post Monday.
“It turns out that on your 146th birthday, you’re running out of space for candles! Biden joked in the post, showing off his cake decorated with dozens of lit candles grouped along the perimeter. The gathered flames formed a flaming ring atop the celebratory dessert, sparking admiration in the post’s comments section.
“Does the Secret Service have a fire division?” one comment joked.
“You could have at least made the cake bigger so all those candles had some room to breathe,” another read.
Biden has made quite a few jokes about his age in recent weeks. He has been increasingly concerned about his age since his 2020 campaign, and his age has come more directly into the spotlight with recent polls showing voters perceive the president as “too old” to serve another term.
Biden spent his birthday Monday pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys at the White House, during which he joked that he was only 60 years old.
“I just want you to know that it’s hard to be 60. Hard,” he said at the ceremony.
He also marked the 76th anniversary of the White House turkey pardoning tradition.
“I want you to know that I wasn’t there first; I was too young to catch up,” he said.
The President and first lady Jill Biden plan to travel to Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Tuesday to celebrate Biden’s birthday with family, and the couple will stay on the island over the Thanksgiving holiday.
