Biden ally James Clyburn lashes out at CNN host for not fact-checking Trump during debate

Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., clashed Sunday with CNN host Dana Bash over the news channel’s handling of the first 2024 presidential debate.

Bash asked Clyburn, who is a longtime ally of the president, if there were any concerns about Biden following what many, including Democrats, saw as a lackluster debate performance against former President Trump. Some of the president’s top allies have called for him to step down before the election.

While defending Biden, Clyburn decried the structure of the debate that did not involve any “fact checking” of Trump’s comments.

“I don’t like debates where no one checks the facts,” Clyburn said Sunday. “You just say what you want to say. You know it’s a lie. The guy told thirty lies! And no one checked it! And he said it was up to Joe Biden to do it. I’m not sure of it. »

CNN PANEL CLASHES OVER BIDEN’S DEBATE PERFORMANCE: ‘THE IDEA THAT IT’S A BAD NIGHT… IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE’

He continued: “If I ask you a question and you lie to me and give me the answer, I should follow up and give you the facts and see what your reaction would be. So, to me, that was not the right way to plan the debate. And whoever did that, agreed to that, should really think about what they’re doing.”

Bash, who co-moderated the debate with Jake Tapper, reminded him: “Well, it was a debate that was accepted by President Biden, the first person to propose this debate.”

Bash also pressured Clyburn by saying Biden could serve another four years beyond a poor debate performance.

“Yeah, it was a bad performance,” Clyburn said. “I’ve been through this kind of thing before. I’ve been involved in preparing for a debate before and I know when I see what I call preparation overload. And that’s exactly what was happening. The other night I saw Joe Biden looking for words, phrases and even numbers he was stuffed with. The next day he arrived in North Carolina, he was freewheeling and he captivated the audience. »

“I think Friday in North Carolina he had a teleprompter,” Bash noted.

Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro also criticized CNN and defended Biden’s debate performance while speaking to CNN host John Berman.

“Frankly, I think CNN could have done a better job exposing (Trump’s) lies,” Shapiro said.

He added: “Joe Biden had a bad debate night, but Donald Trump was a bad president. I’ll be the first to admit that was not a good preview of last night’s debate.”
