Bicyclist collided with a garbage truck in Atherton

ATHERTON – A cyclist was killed in a collision with a garbage truck on Wednesday morning in Atherton, according to the authorities.

The accident occurred around 7:40 a.m. near the intersection of Middlefield Road and Prior Lane, the Atherton police department said in a press release. The cyclist was taken to a hospital in the region, where they were declared dead shortly after.

Death marks the first death of the city of the city year.

An initial investigation determined that the garbage truck was deploying south on Middlefield Road and began to turn right on the anterior track when she struck the cyclist, who also headed south in the designated bicycle lane, police announced.

The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated in the investigation. Police said there was no indication that alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision.

Santa Clara’s County Legalist’s office will publish the identity of the bicyclist once it is confirmed and their closest parent is informed, police said.

The director of the Lycée de Menlo-Argerton, Karl Losekoot, identified the cyclist as being Dylan Taylor, first-year football coach on the campus, according to the Inmenlo news site.

“His tragic loss will be felt by many,” he said in a message to the community and the staff.

On Friday, in a press release, the chief of the police of Atherton, Steven McCulley, said that the police would intensify patrols in the region to attract more attention to the safety of bicycles, pedestrians and vehicles.

“On behalf of the whole team of the police department and the city of Atherton, I present our sincere condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the victim,” said McCulley. “No word can alleviate the pain of such a devastating loss, but know that our thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult period.”

Anyone with information relating to the case can contact the police service at 650-688-6500.
