On the anniversary of the diversion of Sabena Flight 571, the Fifth Brigade of TSAhal held exercises on the ground at which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended.
The diversion of Sabena Flight 571 took place on May 8, 1972, when four black terrorists in September infiltrated the cockpit of a directed plane from Vienne to Lod. The terrorist demanded the release of more than 300 Palestinians from Israeli prisons.
Netanyahu participated in the rescue operation of the Matkal unit of the 90 hostages and told the events to
“Today, we are marking the 53rd anniversary of the operation to release the hostages of the Sabena plane,” Netanyahu said on Thursday. “I was there, I was injured there.”
Netanyahu said the spirit he had seen during Thursday’s exercise corresponded to that of his unit during the 1972 operation.

“The Spirit has not changed – it is exactly the same spirit I see here that pulsate among the soldiers and the commanders, and unites the ranks for a single goal – to reach a great victory. This victory includes both the defeat of Hamas and the exit of our hostages.”
The Prime Minister continued by saying that overcoming Hamas and freeing the hostages would change the face of the Middle East.
“This victory goes beyond that. It radiates throughout the region. To date, we have changed the face of the Middle East. We have brought Hezbollah to your knees, Hamas-under the knees, the Assad regime fell. Iran also felt the strength of our arm,” he said.
“We are always faced with challenges, but we have a strong spirit and this spirit is carried by our army,” he added.
“In Hamas, I say one thing: the rules are about to change very soon – thank you.”
What happened to Sabena Flight 571?
After the four terrorists diverted the theft, Captain Reginald Levy sent distress signals to Israel. The signals were relayed to the Ministry of Defense.
After the plane had an emergency landing at LOD airport, former Defense Minister Moshe Dayan began to negotiate with the black members of September while simultaneously planning a secret rescue for the 90 passengers of the plane.
