After a season with the New England Patriots, Jerry Montgomery joined the AFC North.
The veteran defensive line coach will join the Cincinnati Bengals in the same capacity under new defensive coordinator Al Golden, according to a report Wednesday from Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic.
Montgomery, 45, was hired in Foxborough last February. The ensuing 4-13 season saw the defensive side of the ball allowing 131.4 rushing yards per game while generating an NFL-low 28 sacks. Recent Detroit Lions defensive line coach and running game coordinator Terrell Williams, who worked alongside head coach Mike Vrabel with the Tennessee Titans, has since arrived as defensive coordinator.
Nine seasons were accumulated with the Green Bay Packers before Montgomery headed to Gillette Stadium. Overlapping executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, he served as a defensive assistant from 2015 to 2017 before remaining as defensive line coach in 2018. The title of running game coordinator was added for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns .
A former defensive tackle for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Montgomery signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He then toured the Arena Football League with the Chicago Rush, Colorado Crush and the Las Vegas Gladiators until 2005, while beginning his coaching career. .
Before entering the NFL ranks, Montgomery worked at his alma mater as well as Iowa City West High School, North Iowa Community College, Northern Iowa, Wyoming and Indiana . He then served as defensive line coach at Michigan from 2011 to 2012 and at Oklahoma from 2013 to 2014.
The Bengals previously announced the additions of offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant offensive line coach Michael McCarthy, who also spent 2024 with the Patriots.
