For weeks, the league as a whole assumed that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson would become the next head coach of the Washington Commanders. After deciding not to do so, someone leaked that: (1) Johnson was not the “lock” many thought he was; and (2) its “the asking price scared some teams.”
The report gave Johnson no apparent opportunity to respond to the suggestion, and he provided no information on his “asking price.”
At a press conference on Thursday, Johnson was asked about the information released after he abandoned the commanders.
“There were false narratives in my opinion,” Johnson said, “and it started towards the end of last year, before I made the decision to step down. That comes with the territory. I’m fine with it. That. It’s part of life in the NFL. So (it) doesn’t affect me. But they do. really handled the situation very well.
“I think I sleep well at night knowing what happened, how it happened, why it happened. I’m here. And the people who are closest to me know who I am and what I do.
Johnson was later asked if he wanted to correct the record regarding anything that had been reported.
“No,” he said. “I’m doing well.”
On the one hand, it is honorable that he took the high road. On the other hand, we sometimes have to go lower to fight those who have gone lower.
Regardless, the circumstances suggest that a team that allowed the perception that Johnson was its first choice must have created the impression that it finally got its first pick, even if it wasn’t. the case. That Johnson wasn’t hired not because of his decision, but because of the team’s decision.
Of course, properly functioning organizations: (1) do not allow a false impression to be created about who their first choice is; (2) don’t fail to make a deal that, by all appearances, is about to begin; and (3) don’t make fun of a guy who has made the decision, for whatever reason, not to pursue the job as head coach of this team.
