Violet Affleck, the daughter of actors Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, spoke at this week’s Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting.

On July 9, the 18-year-old made an impassioned plea for the availability of face masks during the meeting’s public comment session. A video of her comments was posted to X, formerly Twitter.

She introduced herself as “Violet Affleck, Los Angeles resident, first-time voter. I’m 18 years old” at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration meeting.

Wearing a face mask, she revealed that in 2019 she contracted a post-viral illness.

“I am better now, but I have seen that medicine does not always have an answer to the consequences of a virus, even a minor one. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted this in a more blatant way,” she explained.

“One in 10 infections result in long COVID, a devastating neurological (and) cardiovascular disease that can rob people of their ability to work, move, see and even think,” she continued. “This threatens to worsen our homelessness crisis, as well as the suffering of many people in our city. It hits communities of color, people with disabilities, older adults, transgender people, women and anyone in essential, public-facing jobs the hardest.”

Although many believe the pandemic is long over, it has had a lasting effect on others.

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of long COVID include fatigue, fever, breathing problems and symptoms that worsen after physical or mental exertion.

Post-COVID-19 syndrome or long COVID occurs when a person experiences “new, recurring, or persistent symptoms” about four weeks after contracting COVID-19. The Mayo Clinic reported that “in some people, post-COVID-19 syndrome lasts for months or years or causes disability.”

Because of these findings and his health issues, Affleck has pushed for more face masks and discussed other ways to protect people with these illnesses.

“To address the long COVID crisis, I am requiring the availability of masks, air filtration, and far-UVC light in government facilities, including jails and detention centers, and requiring mask wearing in county medical facilities,” she explained.

She also urged the council to help “increase the availability of free, high-quality testing and treatment.”

Affleck also urged the county to “oppose mask bans for any reason.”

“They’re not making us safer, they’re making vulnerable members of our community less safe, and they’re making everyone less able to participate together in Los Angeles. Thank you,” she concluded.

The teenager is often seen wearing a face mask when out and about.

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health website, county residents are required to wear a mask in certain circumstances. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • As required in the workplace.
  • As required by current LACDPH Health Officer Orders.
  • In healthcare settings, during a visit or receiving care, when the LA County COVID-19 hospital admission level is medium or high.
  • If required by the site, including certain businesses, healthcare facilities, schools and workplaces.
  • If you are sick with cold, flu, or COVID-19 symptoms, or if you test positive for COVID-19 (even if you are asymptomatic) and must be around other people.
