Beloved Saratoga Cafe Has a New Owner

Big Basin Cafe, a Saratoga Village staple, has a new owner.

Born and raised West Valley resident Jay Wong took over the cafe at 14471 Big Basin Way on June 1.

“I think it’s a good opportunity, a good deal, a good foundation and overall I love the store,” he said.

Loyal customers of the cafe need not worry, as Wong plans to keep the menu the same for now, but leaves room for changes in the future.

“Later, we may change products from time to time to freshen things up a bit, but I can’t really make any similar promises or anything like that,” he said.

The cafe is not currently accepting online orders through its website mybigbasincafe.com, but Wong said the hiatus is only temporary as he works to create a new area and a new website.

Wong’s arrival as the cafe’s new owner comes as the city has embarked on an effort to improve the economic vitality of Saratoga’s commercial areas, including the village. This effort is being led by an ad hoc committee, which held a community meeting in early June to hear community feedback on the issue.

Wong said that right now he has no plans to get involved in the effort because he is just getting set up and doesn’t have much time.

Wong said he was welcomed into the community from his early days as owner. The change in ownership was a relief for Saratoga residents, especially since other community establishments have recently closed their doors, like the 40-year-old Saratoga Dry Cleaners just down the street, which closed its doors in April.

“The Big Basin Café is a great meeting place for friends at any time of the day, so it’s wonderful news that we won’t lose it,” wrote Jill Hunter, president of the Village Development Council, in an email.
