Bell County officials, residents deal with devastation from powerful storm

BELL COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) – Officials in Bell County are dealing with the aftermath of severe storms that rolled through Central Texas on Wednesday.

Fort Cavazos officials are reporting heavy debris blocking several area roads.

Additionally, several roads through Fort Cavazos have high water levels and authorities recommend motorists avoid these areas.

Belton officials are working to restore power to parts of the community after high winds toppled power lines in the area.

The City of Temple confirmed to KWTX that a plane was crashed at Temple Airport. The Temple Mall also suffered storm damage.

Several Temple residents sent photos and videos of a tornado near Ripplewood Drive in Temple.

Beginning May 22, the City of Temple says the Wilson Recreation Center, located at 2205 Curtis B Elliot Drive, will operate as a shelter.

Temple ISD announces that it has canceled classes on May 23, 2024 and plans to resume on Friday, May 24, 2024.

Due to severe weather conditions, the City of Temple has closed several facilities tomorrow, May 23, 2024, including:

  • Temple Public Library
  • Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center
  • Railway and Heritage Museum
  • Sammons Community Center
  • Sammons Golf Course
  • Sammons Indoor Pool
  • Summit Recreation Center
  • Wilson Recreation Center
  • Heart to Home Animal Adoption Center
