Belgian PM files complaint against radio host who told listeners to shoot him – POLITICO

“Calling for violence is punishable. The complaint was filed with the Waregem police. The Prime Minister continues his campaign,” Leyts said. Belgium is due to hold federal elections on June 9.

According to the news channel of the Flemish public broadcaster VRT, the presenter of local radio Waregem1 said: “To all those who plan to shoot Alexander De Croo, but who do not dare to do it because of the security of this guy. You see that it is possible to bring down a prime minister. So I would say: go for it.

In a statement, Waregem1, broadcast from the Belgian province of West Flanders, said it had immediately suspended the presenter, arguing that “he completely misjudged the timing and context and was therefore unable to make this statement.”

“Yesterday, in Waregem1, there was an incorrect declaration from an employee. The presenter says he meant it playfully, but it didn’t happen that way. He apologizes to the listeners and to Waregem1,” the statement said.
