Plastic cups were thrown at Gareth Southgate as he applauded booing supporters after England’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia at Euro 2024.
England topped Group C at Euro 2024 following a 0-0 draw with Slovenia in Cologne after Denmark and Serbia also played out a boring draw in the other match.
But even though the Three Lions could have earned a place in the last 16, a number of traveling supporters were unhappy with the performance at full time.
As Southgate walked around the stadium applauding supporters, cups were seen thrown at the England boss.
There was a mix of boos and cheers echoing around the pitch, with many still unconvinced by England’s performance, who failed to truly test Jan Oblak in the Slovenian net.
Asked about the performance, Southgate said: “I think we have improved a lot, we have created some good openings and at the moment it is difficult for us.
“We didn’t really get the break in front of goal. I thought the boys who came in made a good impact and we had the discipline to keep a clean sheet, which means we’re in the lead of the group.
“I understand some of the reactions, but it’s a strange environment we’re playing in.
Many expected England to improve on their performance after a turgid 1-1 loss to Denmark on Thursday.
Indeed, Southgate promised fans would see “the real England” on Tuesday night to complete their Euro 2024 group campaign.
However, it was an even more difficult period, although the mood in the camp still remained positive.
England captain Harry Kane insisted they achieved their goal by finishing top of the group and also said it was their best performance.
He told ITV after the match: “That was the goal before the tournament started. To come top of the group and control our destiny.
“I think we played a lot better than the other games. We didn’t manage to find this result, but we’re looking forward to the next one.
“We created a few half-chances and there were some that maybe we could have done better.”
England will now face the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Turkey or Georgia on Sunday afternoon, although the situation remains complicated.
England will face Ronald Koeman’s side, who finished third in Group D earlier on Tuesday after losing to Austria, unless the Czech Republic beat Turkey or Georgia win against Portugal in the group F.
This would then radically change the ranking, with Turkey, the Czech Republic and Georgia vying for Hungary’s place.
