A New Hampshire police officer was released from the hospital and is recovering after he was shot in the leg while taking a Nashua man into custody early Saturday morning, police said.

Jared Masseur, 40, was arrested in Bedford, New Hampshire after officers approached a vehicle parked near Country Inn & Suites on South River Road just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, police said. A woman stayed and cooperated with officers, police said, while Masseur allegedly fled on foot.

Masseur allegedly resisted arrest. During a struggle with officers, a gun went off as he tried to take one of the officers’ guns out of their holsters, Bedford police said. A shot struck an officer in the leg, police said.

The wounded officer and a second officer then arrested Masseur.

Masseur is charged with resisting arrest, felon in possession of a dangerous weapon, attempting to take a firearm from an officer, and second-degree assault, Bedford police said in a release. He also had outstanding warrants including a possession of a dangerous weapon and drug possession.

The officer was transported to a Manchester hospital for treatment, and he was released on Sunday, police said.

“We are grateful that our officer was cleared to be released from the hospital,” Chief Daniel Douidi said. “We are very thankful that his injuries weren’t life-threatening and that he’s now at home recovering.”
