Bayern Munich are moving closer to re-signing former manager Julian Nagelsmann, according to a report.

The German club have been looking for a new manager since revealing earlier this year they would be leaving Thomas Tuchel and had been tipped to appoint Xabi Alonso.

Alonso is the man who led the mission to dethrone Bayern for the first time in 12 years, securing Bayer Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title on Sunday, and the Spaniard is set to join one of the best teams in Europe.

But he revealed he would stay at Leverkusen for at least another year, forcing Bayern to look elsewhere to appoint Tuchel’s successor.

According to Aerial sportsthe German’s replacement is expected to be Nagelsmann, who coached Bayern between 2021 and 2023 before taking over the German national team ahead of Euro 2024.

Nagelsmann, 36, was named Germany coach in September last year on a contract until after the Euros, and is expected to step down at the end of the tournament.

He was sacked by Bayern just over a year ago, in March 2023, during an international break when the club was behind Borussia Dortmund in the standings.

Tuchel, Nagelsmann’s former coach at Augsburg, replaced him and won the Bundesliga on the final day, but Bayern announced earlier this season that he would not continue beyond the end of the campaign .

Bayern and Liverpool were seeking Alonso’s signature before he committed his immediate future to Bayer Leverkusen.

The club’s hierarchy are said to be sure Nagelsmann is the right person to lead the overhaul, with Bayern sporting director Max Eberl apparently giving the green light for the appointment.

Eberl joined Bayern this year and therefore did not play a role in the German’s dismissal last year. Former CEO Oliver Khan and then-director Hasan Salihamidzic are believed to be behind the decision.

Bayern are also reportedly keen to hire Sandro Wagner, one of Nagelsmann’s coaches in Germany, but the former striker wants to stay with the national team.

Nagelsmann, who coached Bayern between 2021 and 2023, is preparing to lead Germany at this summer's European Championships.

According to reports, Bayern also hold Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi in high regard and are monitoring the Italian’s situation.

De Zerbi could leave Brighton at the end of the season and has spoken of his desire to see his vision aligned with that of the club’s hierarchy, and some of Europe’s top clubs have been put on red alert.

Liverpool have also been linked with the Seagulls boss, but Sporting manager Ruben Amorim is the favorite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
