Let’s go back to last summer. Leverkusen was, at best, tipped to challenge for the top four.
Alonso had done a good job after taking charge last October, but there was no incentive for them to challenge Bayern, let alone overhaul them. Ending the 2022/23 campaign without a win in five games seemed to illustrate that Leverkusen still had a long way to go.
What they did during this time is astonishing. It’s not just in the Bundesliga that Leverkusen has yet to lose. They have now gone 50 matches without defeat in all competitions, reaching the final of the DFB-Pokal and the Europa League.
This team is therefore three games away from immortality. A victory in each of these competitions (although a draw would suffice this weekend) would make them both treble winners and invincible.
Leverkusen laughed off suggestions that fatigue might catch up with them last week, winning 5-0 against Bochum.
In their final match of the season at the BayArena, Alonso and his players will be determined to put on a show when Augsburg come to town.

Another effect of the impending Europa League final could be that Bayer Leverkusen looks to finish this match and dust it off as quickly as possible.
Being able to reshuffle his pack at half-time or shortly after would be a huge bonus for Alonso, who will want to avoid any injuries ahead of the clash with Atalanta on Wednesday.

It will be interesting to see what type of team Alonso chooses for Saturday’s encounter.
Usually, he could make 11 changes and field a second-line team since the Bundesliga title is over. But as Leverkusen have an unbeaten record to protect, they may not want to take too many risks.
