Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) Female Athlete of the Week Poll.

For the entire academic year, we will compile a list of candidates who stood out during the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week we consider performances from March 25-30.

Polling stations close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you want between now and then without using bots or any other artificial voting methods.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. on Wednesdays are not taken into account.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept applications until 11 a.m. every Monday.

We also review statistics submitted to MaxPreps by the team’s coaches/statisticians.

Let’s move on to the nominees:

Cynthia Arellano, overrated softball: Arellano, a senior, had a forgettable day at the plate in a 29-7 win over Yerba Buena. She was 6 for 6 and hit four home runs with nine RBIs.

Hannah Cornell, Kennedy-Fremont softball: Cornell, a junior, hit three doubles and drove in two runs in Kennedy’s wild 17-11 win over American. She finished the week hitting .600 with 13 RBIs this season.

Angela Gates, Carondelet softball: Gates, a freshman, finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in an upset win over Top 10 team San Ramon Valley. The freshman finished the week with a .515 batting average with 17 hits and two home runs on the season.

Sydney Gray, Miramonte lacrosse: Gray, a freshman, scored six goals and had two assists in a close 18-16 win over Berkeley. The freshman has scored 30 goals and dished out 14 assists this season.

Susan Kirchhoff, Live Oak stick: Kirchhoff, a senior, saved 13 of 16 shots on goal as Leigh beat Willow Glen 8-3 last week. The senior has a .614 save percentage (67 saves total) this season and is 7-1.

Nia Mapa, San Mateo softball: Maps, a senior, pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out four in a 3-0 win over Capuchino. Earlier in the week, she went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in a 10-0 win over Woodside.

Ashlyn Roeder, Menlo-Atherton softball: Roeder, a senior, was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a rout of El Camino. Earlier in the week, she went 2-for-2 in another big win over Jefferson.

Riley Sterling, Castilleja lacrosse: Sterling, a senior, scored nine goals and had two assists in a win over Notre Dame Belmont. She finished the week with 90 goals and 15 assists this season.

Dulcinée Vail, Acalanes athletics: Vail, a junior, won the high jump event at the Stanford Invitational by jumping 1.65 meters. Vail is also a standout on the school’s best basketball team.

Lily Woodhead, Las Lomas lacrosse: Woodhead, the team’s senior captain, scored four goals and had four assists in a win over Alhambra. Then she scored two goals and helped kill time on a four-corner attack in a win over Granada.

Summer Young, Menlo School track and field: Young, a senior, won a jump-off and went 5-5 to win gold in the high jump at the Stanford Invitational. Young also played on the basketball and flag football teams.
