BART Board Member John McPartland announces resignation

OAKLAND – Longtime BART board member John McPartland announced his immediate resignation Monday, citing family issues, according to the commuter rail line.

McPartland’s term ends on December 6. The board has until May 27 to appoint an administrator to the District 5 seat. If no one is appointed by then, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors will have until June 27 to select someone ‘one to fill the vacant position.

The board also has the option to call a special election, but that is not a “practical option” due to the timing of the November election, BART said in a news release.

The person appointed to the seat must be a resident of District 5, which covers Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton and parts of Hayward and unincorporated Alameda County.

The appointee must run for election for the seat on November 5 if they wish to continue serving beyond December 6.

On Monday, BART Board Chairman Bevan Duffy confirmed McPartland’s resignation and said he would place an item on the April 11 agenda to discuss next steps.

McPartland was first elected to the board in November 2008. Before joining the board, he was a BART safety specialist and retired fire chief with the Oakland Fire Department.
