NEW YORK (AP) – The White House blocked on Tuesday an Associated Press journalist from an event at the Oval Office after asking the news agency to modify his style on the Gulf of Mexico, that President Donald Trump ordered The fame of the American Gulf.
The journalist, which the AP would not identify, tried to participate in the White House event as usual on Tuesday afternoon and was repressed. Later, a second AP journalist was excluded from an event at the end of the White House diplomatic room.
The very unusual ban, which officials of the Trump administration had threatened earlier Tuesday unless the AP changed the style on the Gulf, could have constitutional implications on freedom of disposition.
Julie Pace, principal vice-president and editor-in-chief of the AP, qualified the decision of the unacceptable administration.
“It is alarming that the Trump administration would punish AP for its independent journalism,” said Pace in a declaration. “Limit our access to the Oval Office according to the content of the AP speech not only seriously obstructs public access to independent news, but it clearly violates the first amendment.”
The Trump administration made no immediate announcement on the movements, and there was no indication that other journalists were affected. Trump has long been a contradictory relationship with the media. Friday, the administration expelled a second group of press organizations Pentagon office space.
Before its inauguration of January 20, Trump announced its intention to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” - and signed an executive decree to do it as soon as it was in office. The president of Mexico responded sarcastically and others noted that the name change would probably not affect global use.
In addition to the United States, the body of water – named the Gulf of Mexico for more than 400 years – also borders Mexico.
AP said last month, Three days after the inauguration of Trump, which he would continue to refer to the Gulf of Mexico while noting Trump’s decision to rename him as well. As a global press agency that broadcasts news in the world, the AD says that it must ensure that place names and geography are easily recognizable for all audiences.
The AP style is not only used by the agency. The style of style AP is invoked by thousands of journalists and other writers in the world.
With the exception of journalist AP, there was an affront to the first amendment of the American Constitution, which prohibits the government from preventing freedom from the press, said Tim Richardson, director of journalism and disinformation of Pen America.
The association of White House correspondents qualified the move from the unacceptable White House and called on the administration to change course.
“The White House cannot dictate how press organizations report the news, and should not penalize journalists who work because it is not satisfied with the decision of their publishers,” said Eugene Daniels, president of The WHCA.
This week, Google Maps began to use “Gulf of America”, saying that it had a “long -standing practice” to follow the example of the US government on such questions. The other leading online card supplier, Apple Maps, still used the “Gulf of Mexico” earlier Tuesday, but at the beginning of the evening had changed for “Gulf of America” on certain navigators, although at least a search has produces results for both.
Trump also decreed that the Alaska mountain known as Mont McKinley and then by its native name, Denali, returned to commemorate the 25th president. President Barack Obama had ordered him renamed Denali in 2015. AD said last month that he would use the official name for Mount McKinley because the region is only in the United States and Trump has the power to change The federal geographic names of the country.
