Barricaded suspect found dead after house catches fire in Surprise: PD

A suspect accused of shooting a baby multiple times was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after barricading himself inside a home that caught fire in a neighborhood in Surprise.

He was identified as 51-year-old Todd Christopher Marchetti.

The house caught fire shortly after 3 p.m. on May 17.

Hostage situation leaves baby shot and house destroyed

A hostage situation in Surprise left a trail of destruction: a newborn was shot multiple times and a house was destroyed in a massive fire. FOX 10’s Brian Webb has the latest update.

Surprise Police Sergeant Rick Hernandez said one shot was fired by officers at the suspect before the fire started.

Police believe the suspect was barricaded inside the home when it caught fire.

When officers arrived on scene around 11 a.m. near Cactus Road and Cotton Lane, they heard gunshots coming from inside the home. Officers forced entry into the home and found a 6-month-old baby with multiple gunshot wounds.

The officers took the baby out of the house, according to Hernandez. He noted that the baby had been shot several times in the lower extremities and was in surgery at 4:30 p.m.

Surprised police take stock of barricaded suspect

Surprise The police are taking stock of a fire in a house where a suspect is believed to be barricaded.

A woman reported to authorities that she was being held hostage by a suspect at the scene, and that’s how the incident began.

Hernandez said she was able to get out of the house around 11:30 a.m., although it was unclear how.

The suspect was not identified by police, but they said police opened a domestic violence-related investigation two weeks ago involving the man and woman who lived there.

Police said the suspect did not reside at the Surprise home.
