BARK Air, First Airline for Dogs, Takes Off from Westchester NY Airport

Local pups can now fly fur class with BARK Air from Westchester County Airport.

Tickets have been sold out for the world’s first luxury airline flight for dogs, from Westchester to Los Angeles, on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Traveling with dogs is usually complicated depending on each airline’s travel policies. Some airlines have even come under fire in recent years for their treatment of furry companions, whether small pet dogs or larger dogs forced to travel as cargo.

However, this airline, created by dog toy brand BARK, has teamed up with a jet charter service to transport man’s best friend and his owners “in comfort and style” for a stress-free flight, CEO Matt Meeker said in a Reuters airline video. .

The company said on its website that it uses “the white glove experience, typical of the first-class human experience, and redirects all that care to the dogs.”

“We’re excited to leverage the knowledge we’ve gained over the years to create a truly dog-focused experience, which is radically different from just being dog-friendly – from the ground to the skies,” said Meeker in a press release Wednesday.

Where does BARK Air fly and how much does it cost?

Flights are currently available from Westchester County Airport to Biggin Hill Airport in London and Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles.

A “white-footed” experience is perhaps even an understatement. From its first flight, a ticket for a dog and its human costs at least $6,000 one way for domestic flights and $8,000 for international flights.

BARK Air passengers can also skip TSA checks in favor of a simple check-in process, dogs can mingle with other passengers before the flight, and humans will be served a chef-prepared meal at the airport.

What amenities does BARK Air offer?

The airline said flight attendants are also trained to handle dogs and their needs while adapting to the travel experience. A “Dogs Fly First” routine at the start of the flight will include calming music, scents and colors that address canine anxiety and pups will receive noise-canceling earmuffs, anti-anxiety vests and all the treats that they can imagine.

During takeoff and landing, dogs can also sip their own fancy drink which will help their ears adjust to cabin pressure. Meeker said dogs would even benefit from a spa experience 3,000 feet in the air. No cages to be seen on a Bark Air flight. Dogs are free to sit on the seat, on a bed or even on their owner.

In the event of a bathroom emergency, Bark Air will have designated areas for pups to do their business before the flight and emergency areas during the flight.

Bark Air said 15 dogs and their humans are welcome on each flight, but it never sells more than 10 tickets per flight in order to give the pups room to roam. Children are also not allowed to accompany their four-legged friends during the flight. Each passenger must be at least 18 years old.
