The five European Champions Barcelona reached their first semi-final in the Champions League in six seasons with a global victory of 5-3 despite their 3-1 beat by Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
Serhou Guirassy scored a hat -trick so that Dortmund condemns Barça to their first defeat in all competitions this year, but that could not prevent the Catalans from reaching the last four.
Barcelona will face Inter Milan or Bayern Munich, who will face the last four on Wednesday.
“Dortmund has succeeded very well. We did not have our best day. I felt that something like it would happen today because I know the stadium well,” said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick.
“Things did not go too well for us but Dortmund played very well. But congratulations to my team, we are in the semi-finals. We are happy. I am really happy for the team and the club.”
The visitors found themselves on the rear foot since the start with Dortmund firing blocks while they were trying to bounce back from last week’s 4-0 defeat.
Dortmund impresses but lack of gas
Dortmund, who attracted 2-2 against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday, had two golden chances in the first minutes before the chipped penalty of Guirassy in the 11th minute gave them a deserved lead.
The Spaniards, undefeated in 2025 entering the game, gradually fought back and could have leveling if it was not for a sloppy finish by Jules Kounde in the 40th.
After the break, however, Dortmund was again the strongest side at the start and Guirassy managed after the head sign of Ramy Bensebaini for a corner four minutes after restarting to light the hopes of a potential record for record correspondence.
Dortmund’s attempt to match Barcelona’s record in the champions league for a deficit of four goals in the front row in direct elimination stadium was derailed by the goal of Bensebaini in the 54th minute which adjusted the Spanish nerves.
Robert Lewandowski had put Bensebaini under pressure when he hunted a reduction in Fermin Lopez, and the Dortmund player stabbed the ball in his own net.
Lopez then had the chance to score in the 64th, but his shot missed the target.
Guirassy, the first Dortmund player to score 13 goals in a single campaign in the Champions League, finished his hat -trick in the 76th, leaping on a defensive error.
But, with Dortmund, who is struggling in the Bundesliga and risks missing football from the Champions League next season, still needing two additional goals to take the game for more time, the hosts gradually lacked vapor.
“We wanted to play better and more courageously and support ourselves more in the field,” said Pascal Gross from Dortmund.
“We did it today and it was a completely different game. It is a shame that we did not play like that during the first leg because we could have drawn something from it.”
