Barack Obama reveals his favorite films and books in 2023 – The Hollywood Reporter

It’s that time of year again where Barack Obama shares his favorite movies, books and music every year.

“As I usually do this time of year, I wanted to share my favorite books, movies and music of 2023,” the former president wrote on social media, asking his followers to comment on their favorites as well.

In his usual fashion, Obama shared separate articles for each outlet, starting by listing his picks for the best books of the year, including The Ciel & Terre grocery store (James McBride), The maniac (Benjamin Labatut), Poverty, by America (Matthieu Desmond), How to say Babylon (Safiya Sinclair), The bet (David Grann), Flea War (Chris Miller) and The vast wilderness (Lauren Groff).

His other top choices were Humanly possible (Sarah Bakewell), King: a life (Jonathan Eig), The Water Alliance (Abraham Verghèse), The best minds (Jonathan Rosen), All sinners bleed (SA Cosby), The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory (Tim Alberta), Some people need to be killed (Patricia Evangelista) and This other Eden (Paul Harding).

Next up were his favorite movies of the year, which featured three films produced by his and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground. He wrote in his article: “I’m biased since these films were produced by Higher Ground, but these are actually three of the best films I’ve seen this year”: Rustin, Leave the world behind And American Symphony.

The former president also acknowledged the historic Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes that took place earlier this year. He wrote in the caption: “Writers and actors went on strike to advocate for better working conditions and protections. This has led to significant changes that will transform the industry for the better. Here are some films that reflect their hard work over the past year.

Other films on his list included Leftovers, Blackberry, Oppenheimer, American fiction, Anatomy of a fall, Monster, Past lives, Air, Polite society And One thousand and one.

Obama hasn’t revealed his top music choices in 2023, but The Hollywood Reporter will continue to keep an eye out and will update this story at that time.
