Former President Barack Obama became a content creator after his presidency, launching a, Higher Ground, with his wife Michelle. Mr. Obama’s latest project is a podcast with an “unlikely” friend – Bruce Springsteen.
The former president and the rocker launched Monday on Spotify the podcast “Renegades: Born in the USA” produced by Higher Ground.
The duo presented their joint venture with two episodes, the first titled “Outsiders: An Unlusted Friendship”. Mr. Obama reflects on the conflicts caused by the pandemic and racial injustice in America and how the country can “find its way back to a more unifying history,” he says.
“This topic has come to dominate so many of my conversations last year, with Michelle, with my daughters and with my friends,” Mr. Obama continues. “And one of those friends happens to be Mr. Bruce Springsteen.”
Mr. Obama says that at first glance he, a lawyer and politician from Hawaii, and Springsteen, a rock star from New Jersey, seem to have little in common. “But over the years, what we’ve found is that we have a common sensibility,” he says. “About work, family and America. In our own way Bruce and I have taken side trips to try and understand this country that has given so much to both of us.”
They sat down and had conversations for the eight-episode podcast over the course of a few days at a converted farmhouse on the Springsteen property. The first topic they discussed was why they felt like strangers when they were kids, and “unsurprisingly, the conversation then shifted to what has been America’s central dilemma since its birth. foundation: the issue of race, ”says Obama.
In Episode 2, “American Skin: Race in the United States,” which also dropped on Monday, Spotify says they “reflect on their early experiences with race and racism and the uncomfortable conversations we must have.” In the 42-minute episode, the hosts talk about Springsteen’s “integrated” E Street Band and the central importance of late saxophonist Clarence Clemons.
“Renegades” will also cover a wide range of other topics including fatherhood, marriage and the state of the United States, Spotify said in a statement to CBS News.
“President Obama and Bruce Springsteen have formed a deep friendship since their first election meeting in 2008,” the statement said. “Now, for the very first time, Higher Ground and Spotify invite listeners to tune in to tunes as they discuss their hometowns and role models, explore modern manhood, and confront the painfully divided state of America. ‘today and how we can all move forward together.
