Authorities have publicly identified a homeless man who died last weekend from injuries he suffered nearly a month earlier in a hit-and-run accident in the Balboa Park area.
Darren Stevenson, 54, died of his injuries Sunday morning at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Stevenson was walking south with a companion on a bike path on Pershing Drive, just east of Interstate 5 around 8:15 p.m. on April 3 when a car hit him from behind, leaving him with a brain hemorrhage , a collapsed lung and skull fractures. and spine, police said.
Following the impact, the motorist continued driving and left the scene.
Based on vehicle debris left at the scene, investigators believe the vehicle that struck the victim may have been a black 2007 to 2012 Toyota Camry. The car was missing a passenger side mirror and may have suffered damage. other damage visible when she struck Stevenson, police said.
