Officials were forced to close the McKees Rocks Bridge after 23 barges allegedly broke free from a tugboat on the Ohio River.
The McKees Rocks Police Department said shortly after midnight they would close the bridge as a precaution.
According to the department, a number of barges have currently broken loose while traveling down the Ohio River.
A local police scanner page indicated there were about 23 barges going down the river, including one hitting a marina dock.
In a statement, police said: “There are a number of raging barges moving down the Ohio River.
The McKees Rocks Police Department said shortly after midnight it would close the bridge, seen here, as a precaution.
According to the department, a number of barges have currently broken loose while traveling down the Ohio River.
“They may or may not come into contact with the substructure, but we are not prepared to take the risk.” Please avoid this area until further notice.
This comes just weeks after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a container ship.
The ship – the Singapore-flagged Dali – had been underway for 20 minutes when it struck a support column on the bridge.
Divers recovered three bodies from the underwater wreckage, while the other three victims remain missing.
Crews worked to extract sections of the fallen bridge, including those tangled in a muddy mess at the bottom of the Patapsco River.
