Authorities identify Idaho man who was killed by police after fatal shooting of deputy

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Authorities have released the name of the Idaho man who was killed last weekend after being identified as the suspect in the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy, and police of Boise are asking the public for more information about it.

Dennis Mulqueen, 65, of Boise, died of a gunshot wound early Sunday morning, the Ada County coroner said. Mulqueen was suspected of killing Ada County Sheriff’s Deputy Tobin Bolter during a traffic stop Saturday evening, according to police.

Bolter, 27, was shot as he approached the driver’s window of the stopped vehicle around 9 p.m. A witness called 911 and performed CPR on Bolter before an ambulance arrived, but he died at a local hospital. He was the first deputy in the county to be killed in the line of duty, Sheriff Matt Clifford said.

Police found the suspect’s vehicle unoccupied about 30 minutes later, then found a man believed to be the suspect outside a home, Police Chief Ron Winegar said Sunday. Members of the police tactical unit tried to convince him to surrender, but Winegar said the man started shooting shortly after midnight and an officer returned fire, hitting him.

Police rendered aid, but Mulqueen was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Police said Mulqueen was the subject of a misdemeanor arrest warrant, but they do not know what led to Saturday’s shooting. Detectives said Tuesday they were trying to learn more about Mulqueen and asked anyone who interacted with him in the days before the shooting to call the department.
