- Football Australia Boss says that captain’s decision does not belong to him
- Superstar striker Sam Kerr is still recovering from a serious knee injury
Football Australia has moved away from the debate on the question of whether Sam Kerr should come back as a captain of the Matildas, declaring that the decision does not belong to him – despite the superstar which faces the board of directors on the issue in March.
Kerr, 31, is currently working after undergoing surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL) that she suffered in January 2024 during a training camp with Chelsea.
The footballer had to return in recent months, following his high -level trial in which Kerr was found not guilty of harassment racly aggravated by a British police officer.
Football Australia met Kerr in March and determined that she should not face any disciplinary action on this subject and could continue as skipper of the national team on his return.
“I want to express my sincere regret for the way the events took place,” Kerr said in a statement from the FA at the time.
“It was an incredibly difficult period for me, my family, my club, my teammates and especially for fans whose support means so much for us.
Australian football boss Heather Garriock said that the captain’s decision was not theirs to make – declaring that the decision lies in the coach

Sam Kerr avoided being stripped of the Matildas captain after meeting Australia Board football in March following his high -level legal affair
“I recognize that leadership means being aware of our actions on and off the field.
“I am proud of the Matildas, of the role I played as a member of this team, and from all that we defend, and I agree to learn from this experience.
However, the CEO of New Football Australia, Heather Garrick, said that the captain of the national team is not the decision of the director.
“This is not our role,” Garriock told 10 news.
“The captain is not our organizational role. In the end, whatever happens, it comes back to the coach.
Joe Montemurro should be announced as the new Matildas coach in the coming days, but Garriock insists that the appointment is still not confirmed.
“If Joe was the coach, he would obviously add so much … But it’s not a matter concluded,” said Garriock.
Meanwhile, Kerr’s partner Kristie Mewis recently gave birth to their son Jagger Mewis-Kerr.
