Australian police investigate stabbing at Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney

Australian police say an attacker killed five people in a stabbing attack at a Sydney shopping mall, and several others were injured and hospitalized, including a young child.

The attacker stabbed at least nine people in the mall before a police officer shot him dead, police said at a news conference Saturday.

The attacker is not known to police and his motive is unclear, police said, adding that they were investigating a critical incident and had not ruled out terrorism as a motive.

The large, upscale shopping center is located in Sydney’s affluent Eastern Beaches area, less than three kilometers from Bondi Beach.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had been informed of the incident, write on social networks: “Tragically, multiple casualties have been reported and the first thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and their loved ones. Our thoughts are with the injured and we thank those caring for them as well as our brave police officers and first responders.
