Learner Tien’s upset of Daniil Medvedev was one of the most unexpected results in recent Australian Open history.

Medvedev has reached three of the last four finals in Melbourne and has appeared in six hard-court Grand Slam finals.

Tien’s victory opened the top half of the men’s singles rankings in favor of Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner.

Fritz earned his second straight tournament victory on Thursday. He is one of three seeds remaining in his quarter of the draw.

Top-seeded Sinner needed four sets to land in the third round. The Italian is on track to face Australian Alex De Minaur in the quarters.

Fritz and Tien are five of six Americans remaining in the draw. Five of them reside in the upper half of the table. Three of these players are unranked. Fritz could face No. 21 seed Ben Shelton in the fourth round if they both win in the third round.
