Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been diagnosed with heart damage after recovering from Covid-19 during the Africa Cup of Nations. The Arsenal striker was left out of Gabon’s 1-1 draw with Ghana on Friday.

The “heart lesions” were discovered during a check-up by medical officials from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Gabonese federation said in a statement. Officials examined Aubameyang after he returned following a positive Covid test. Two of his Gabonese teammates, striker Axel Meyé and midfielder Mario Lemina, who both had the same problem.

Aubameyang tested positive at an airport upon his arrival in Cameroon last week and has been placed in solitary confinement. The 32-year-old missed Gabon’s opener of the tournament, a 1-0 win over Comoros. He tested negative for the virus and left solitary confinement two days before the match against Ghana and was expected to return to the squad.

Athletic (£) report that Arsenal doctors have reportedly spoken to the Gabon medical team about the diagnosis and have been reassured the player is feeling fine and the situation is not serious.

Bayern’s Davies to miss Canada qualifiers

Alphonso Davies will miss three World Cup qualifiers for Canada due to signs of heart muscle inflammation after contracting Covid-19.

Earlier on Friday, Davies was ruled out “for a while” by Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann after signs of mild myocarditis were detected. The 21-year-old winger tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in January.

Canada Soccer has now confirmed that Davies will miss games against Honduras, USA and El Salvador between January 27 and February 2. The news is a blow for a Canadian side who are leading the final round of Concacaf qualifying and closing in on a place at the 2022 World Cup.
