Attempted carjacking ends in injury shooting near Lake Merritt

OAKLAND — A 66-year-old Stockton man was shot multiple times Wednesday morning during an attempted carjacking in the Eastlake District, authorities said.

The man was in stable condition in hospital.

The shooting, which triggered a gunshot detection system alert, occurred around 1:10 a.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Third Avenue, near East 12th Street.

Police said the man was parked when an SUV pulled up alongside him and two armed men got out. The gunmen tried to get the 66-year-old man out of his car and, when he apparently resisted, one of them shot him at least twice, police said.

The suspects then fled in the SUV driven by a third suspect north on Third Avenue and were gone when police arrived. The injured man was able to get to the hospital himself.

Police are trying to determine why he was in Oakland. Detailed descriptions of the three suspects have not been released.

Oakland police and Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $7,500 for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information can contact police at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
