Atari’s 50th Anniversary Collection Gets a Major Update with Nearly 40 Additional Games

Atari pretty much started this whole home console gaming thing with the 2600, a precursor to the NES. This console is 45 years old and Atari itself was created over 50 years ago. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the company launched a robust collection of games called Atari 50: the anniversary celebration. It’s now getting a significant update with nearly 40 additional games, although Atari has yet to release the full list of new titles.

This brings the total games available with this collection to almost 130, derived from several home and portable consoles. Atari 50: Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition also adds two new timelines to the software. Basically, these timelines are interactive history lessons about the business, complete with video segments and playable games.

One of the timelines is a deep dive into the company’s history, titled The Wider World of Atari. This offers retrospectives on the classic arcade machine Berzerk, Pong designer Al Alcorn and artist Evelyn Seto, who designed the company’s iconic logo. The timeline of the First Console War enters the battle between the Atari 2600 and Intellivision, which was a prelude to Nintendo versus Sega. Furthermore, Atari has just bought Intellivision, officially ending the rivalry.

The update is rolling out this fall. This will also be the definitive version in the future. For new buyers, Atari 50: Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition costs $40, with a Steelbook edition priced at $50. It will be available on almost all platforms, including Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. The physical edition of the Steelbook, reserved for the Switch and PS5, comes with art cards, arcade branding panels, replica business cards and much more.
