At least six people were killed and ten injured after gunfire rang out in the Californian capital early Sunday morning.

Sacramento officers were patrolling the area around 2 a.m. when they heard gunshots near 10th and J streets, Police Chief Kathy Lester said at a news conference.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a large crowd gathered in the street and six people dead.

Ten others were transported to area hospitals by ambulance and private vehicles. Their conditions remain unknown.

‘[This is] a very intricate and complicated scene,’ Lester told media, calling on residents to provide police with any information on tapes of the incident.

Police have not provided any information on the shooter, however, a law enforcement source told The Sacramento Bee that the shooter remains at large. Authorities did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for comment.

Citizens have been advised to avoid the area.
