A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Tibet on January 7, in southwest China. At least 95 people were killed and 130 others injured. The epicenter was located in the territory of Tingri county, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The death toll from the earthquake in Tibet, in southwest China, rose to 95 dead and 130 injured, the daily reported on January 7. Nanfang Ribao, after an initial toll of 53 dead and 62 injured, reported earlier by the Xinhua agency, citing the regional emergency headquarters.
This earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8 according to the Chinese National Earthquake Agency (CENC), occurred at 9:05 a.m. local time. Its epicenter was located at a depth of ten kilometers, in the territory of Tingri county. More than a thousand buildings were damaged.
Reuters says the effects of the earthquake were felt throughout Tibet’s Shigatse region, where 800,000 people live. Residents of Tingri County reported strong tremors, followed by dozens of aftershocks with a magnitude of up to 4.4, the agency reported.
Tremors were also felt in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal as well as in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, and in the state of Bihar in northern India. According to Indian authorities, no damage has yet been reported in the country, reports Reuters.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered that every effort be made to carry out search and rescue operations and keep the number of casualties to a minimum.
