Abuja, Nigeria – The number of deaths of devastating floods in a market city NigeriaThe northern state of Niger increased to at least 200 on Sunday, said a local official.
The torrents of precipitation warned early Thursday sparked the devastating flood on Mokwa, nearly 236 miles west of Abuja and a large shopping and transport center where Northern Nigerian Farmers Sell beans, onions and other foods to southern merchants.
Mokwa local government vice-president, Musa Kimboku, confirmed on Sunday the count of the updated deaths to the Associated Press. He said the rescue operations have been canceled because the authorities no longer believe that there are survivors.
To prevent the triggering of the disease, those responsible currently exhumed the bodies buried under the rubble, added Kimboku.
On Saturday, the spokesman for the Emergency Service of the State of Niger, Ibrahim Audu Husseini, said that 11 additional people had been injured and that more than 3,000 people had been moved.
At least 500 households in three communities were affected by the sudden and intense floods that quickly built themselves in about five hours, leaving the roofs barely visible and surviving residents to the water in the water, trying to save what they could and save others.
Husseini added that two roads had been swept away and that two bridges collapsed.
Friday evening, in a statement, President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences and said that he had directed the activation of an emergency intervention to support the victims and “accelerate” the recovery.
The floods are common during the Nigeria rainy season. The Nigeria communities have experienced prolonged drought periods aggravated by climate change and excessive precipitation which cause serious floods during the brief rainy season. But this flood was particularly deadly in Mokwa, an agricultural region near the banks of the Niger river.
Aliki Musa, head of the Mokwa community, said the villagers were not used to such floods.
The president of the Mokwa local government area, Jibril Muregi, told the local premium website that the construction of flood control was long expected.
