A 20 -year -old student at Florida State University in Tallahassee shot two people on Thursday and injured six, police announced. The shooter was identified as the son of a deputy from the department of local sheriff and was placed in police custody after being killed by the police, said law enforcement officials.
The officials said that the shooter, identified as Phoenix Ikner, was armed with a former service revolver of his mother, a deputy who worked at the Sheriff’s office in Leon for 18 years and was authorized to keep the weapon for personal use.
Mr. Ikner had been involved in training programs at the Sheriff Office and was a member of his advisory committee for young people, said Sheriff Walter McNeil.
“It was imbued with the family’s sheriff’s office in Leon,” said the sheriff. “It is not a surprise for us that he had access to weapons.”
Chef Lawrence E. Revell of the Tallahassee police department said that Mr. Ikner also had a hunting rifle with him, but the Revell chief said he was not sure that Gun had been used in the attack.
The two people killed during the shooting were not students, said law enforcement officials. They had not been identified from Thursday evening.
