FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 99.
Officers responded at 9:15 a.m. Sunday to the portion of the highway between North and Cedar avenues.
Mike Salas with the CHP says at least one person is dead and several others, including children, are injured.
The people suffered minor or serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
He said there was only 10 to 15 feet of visibility on the road at the time of the pileup.
Salas says 15 to 20 cars of all sizes were involved and believes fog was a factor.
Initial reports indicate that two vehicles slowed down, while several vehicles behind them were traveling faster, causing accidents.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including medical personnel and firefighters.
A Fresno FAX bus also helped transport people with minor injuries.
Salas urges drivers to take a different route and reminds everyone to be careful on the road.
The affected highway area is expected to be closed until late afternoon while the investigation continues.
