At least 11 dead, 40 injured after truck crashes into bar in Dominican Republic

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A truck plowed into a bar in the Dominican Republic early Sunday, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 40, authorities said.

The accident occurred in the community of Azua, located west of the capital, Santo Domingo, Juan Salas, director of civil defense, told The Associated Press.

One of the victims was a police sergeant, police spokesman Diego Pesqueira said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately determined, but authorities are examining cameras installed in the area, Salas said.

Pesqueira said the truck driver fled and was not found. He added that police arrested a passenger in the truck, which was carrying lawyers.

Most of the injured were taken to a nearby hospital, with four in critical condition, said Shaira Castillo, a spokeswoman for the National Health Service. The injured are girls and women aged 17 to 45 and men aged 18 to 55.
