At least 10 dead in Russian missile strike on Ukrainian supermarket and post office

A Russian missile strike hit a supermarket in the Ukrainian town of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk border region on Friday, killing at least 10 people and wounding 35 others, Ukrainian officials said.

The strike caused a fire that was brought under control, the interior minister said. Thick clouds of black smoke rising from the destroyed building were visible in images and videos released by authorities.

“Russian terrorists attacked an ordinary supermarket and a post office. There are people under the rubble,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on X.

Emergency services are continuing to search through the rubble for survivors, he added.

Regional Governor Vadym Filashkin initially said Russia had used artillery, but later said the attack was carried out using an X-38 air-to-ground missile.

Nova Poshta, Ukraine’s largest private postal company, said its cargo office in the supermarket was damaged in the strike.

“All our employees are alive. One colleague suffered a concussion. He is receiving all the necessary help,” the company said on X.

Residential houses, shops and more than a dozen cars were also damaged in the attack, according to the interior minister’s message on Telegram.

Kostiantynivka is located about 13 kilometers from the front line in eastern Ukraine. kyiv-controlled areas of the Donetsk region are regularly targeted by Russian shelling and airstrikes.

The region is one of the hottest combat zones, with Russia targeting areas towards the strategic eastern logistics hub of Pokrovsk.

Russia this week accused Ukraine of launching a cross-border offensive in the Kursk region. Kiev’s military has not yet commented on the operation.
