—

At least 10 Cuban migrants died and 17 others were injured when the truck they were traveling in overturned in southern Mexico on Sunday, Mexican authorities said.

The truck was “irregularly” transporting 27 Cuban nationals on the Pijijiapan-Tonalá highway in the southern state of Chiapas when the accident occurred, the National Migration Institute (INM) said ) of Mexico in a press release.

Officials said initial reports suggested the driver was speeding and lost control of the unit, fleeing the scene after it overturned.

The 10 victims were women and among them a minor, authorities said. All the injured are being treated in hospital.

“The INM will establish communication with the consular authorities to begin the administrative procedure for repatriating the bodies to their country of origin and is aware of the evolution of the state of health of the seriously injured people,” the press release specifies.

Migrants from Central America and the Caribbean sometimes cross Mexico in trucks and trailers hoping to reach the United States.

In 2021, 55 people were killed and more than 100 injured when a truck suspected of also transporting migrants overturned in Chiapas state, which borders Guatemala.
