The right -hander of Houston Astros, launches McCullers Jr., said that he and his family were the subjects of death threats made on social networks after granting seven points as part of a first round in 10 points for the Reds of Cincinnati on Saturday evening.
A team spokesperson said the Astros informed the Houston police service and major threat baseball security.
“I understand that people are very passionate and people love astros and love sports, but threatening to find my children and murdering them is a bit difficult to manage,” said McCullers. “So, as a father, I think there have been a lot, a lot of threats over the years aimed especially, and I actually think that one or two other problems around baseball should actually go to prison for things like that. But I think that making my children pass to death, threatening to find them or the next time they see us in public.”
McCullers and his wife, Kara, have two young girls.
McCULLERS (0-1) was only doing his second departure since match 3 of the world series 2022 after fighting a series of right-of-law problems. All-star in 2018, he spent his eight seasons from large leagues in Houston.
A visibly upset manager Joe Espada addressed the threats to his post-match press conference.
“There are people who threaten his life and the life of his children because of his performance,” said Espada. “It is very regrettable that we have to face it. After all, he did for this city, for his team, the fact that we have to talk about it in my office – I also have children and it really drives me crazy that we have to face this. Very sad, very sad.
“Listen, he has not launched two and a half years. … It will take a little time to move it forward. And it’s okay. But it can’t happen. I’m really upset that it can happen to athletes.”
McCullers had trouble with his command from the start on Saturday. He walked at the start of the TJ Friedl striker before diving Matt Mclain at the back. Elly de la Cruz then struck a three-point circuit in the opposite field to the left to do it 3-0.
McCullers walked two more strikers with a withdrawal before Tyler Stephenson hit a simple RBI. Will Benson followed with a double RBI to do it 5-0 and Chase McCullers.
He was replaced by Logan Vanwey, but the Reds continued to accumulate, sending 15 strikers to the plate before Santiago Espinal ultimately removed to put an end to the Channel.
It was the most points in cincinnati during a first round since August 1989, when they scored 14, also against the Astros.
“If you fail, you fail on a very large scene (with) a lot of eyes and there is nowhere to hide,” said McCullers. “At the end of the day, I just want to do my job. I just want to be a good launcher for the astros and I think I will get there, but as I said, I just think that I have to worry about it, to worry about leaving the city and leaving them and things like that or to put it in school, I just think … there should be a certain type of decency.”
The Reds won the match on Saturday 13-9 while Houston lost for the fourth time in the last six games.
