Ashley Young names England midfield trio for Euro 2024 that will end 58 years of suffering for the Three Lions

Gareth Southgate has been urged to start Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden in midfield if he wants to win Euro 2024.

That’s the view of his former star Ashley Young, who insisted an attacking approach in Germany would end 58 years of suffering for England.

The Three Lions head into this summer’s European Championship as one of the favorites, but it remains to be seen who will even be named in the line-up.

Southgate must decide whether Arsenal star Rice will be deployed as a lone defensive midfielder, whether Bellingham plays an advanced role and whether Foden will be used as a winger.

But Young, who will be part of talkSPORT’s Euro 2024 coverage, believes the trio could guide England to European glory if they appear together in midfield.

Giving his say on who should start in midfield on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, Young said: “I hope we go for an attacking formation with Declan Rice sitting.

“I would love to see Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham right in front of him.

“I’m just going to express myself, I’m just going to show that England have the attacking talent to beat anyone they come up against.

“So I hope Gareth does, but he has some tough choices to make.

“But I’m sure if he goes for an attacking formation – and with fit boys – then I’m sure the boys can go there and win the tournament.”

Young was then asked by co-host – and former Aston Villa teammate – Gabby Agbonlahor who he would prefer to start at right-back between Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

To which he remarked: “I wouldn’t say I prefer it, but Kyle Walker.

“Obviously he’s experienced, but you can’t fault them, they’re both fantastic players.

“And then you look at the question about left back, who is going to play left back?

“For me, when Luke Shaw is fit, he is the number one left-back.

“But missing this big part of the season is difficult, but as long as he is fit I would play him.

“And then you go to central defense, to choose from there, players who are fit, others who are not fit, others who play better for their country than for their club.

“(Eric Dier) has had a fantastic six months since he left for Bayern (Munich), so like I said, the manager is going to have a headache picking this team, let alone picking this team .”

England are expected to top Group C, with Southgate’s side starting their tournament with a clash against Serbia on June 16.

They will then face Denmark four days later, before facing Slovenia on June 25.

Should they win in Germany, it would be England’s first major honor since winning the World Cup on home soil in 1966.
