Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya sat down by Harry Kane penalty after error for Serge Gnabry goal

David Raya had a first half to forget as Bayern Munich turned around their Champions League clash against Arsenal.

Arsenal were cruising after scoring an early goal in their Champions League match at the Emirates through Bukayo Saka before a moment of madness at the back and a Harry Kane penalty turned things around in the first leg.

William Saliba fouled Leroy Sane in the box to give Kane the chance to give Bayern the lead, with Raya having already made his decision for him before shooting.

As the England international headed towards the ball, the Spaniard dived to his right, giving Kane the opportunity to roll it to the other side.

The equalizer came from freak circumstances as well as a long Bayern punt that should have been easily handled.

But Raya inexplicably ran out of his box as Gabriel looked to send him back only to see his goalkeeper alongside him.

The Brazilian then broke free but his loose pass was intercepted by Leroy Sané, who served to Leon Goretzka who passed it to Gnabry, the Germany international striking the ball first time to equalize against his former club.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Andy Townsend was full of criticism of the Arsenal goalkeeper and insisted he should not have rushed.

He said live on air: “I don’t think the goalkeeper needed to go that far.

“Gabriel always gets there, Harry Kane will never beat Gabriel in a sprint from the halfway line to the ball.

“The goalkeeper has moved 40/45 meters from his line and is starting to backtrack.

“Gabriel could have given it back to him if he had stayed there, on the edge of his box and waited for him. He didn’t need to come all this way.”

It was the first goal Raya had conceded in 504 minutes and the first time Arsenal had conceded at home in the Champions League this season.
